Every summer, k-Space hires student interns and gives them each an opportunity to learn first-hand the many great career paths in metrology–which spans physics, engineering, computer programming, machine learning, production, logistics, and sales support.

Our interns are challenged, they are paid, and their contributions are expected to lead to finished products. This year’s interns all exceeded expectations.

Thank you, Jacob Wilburn, Eric Smaby, Alexandra Daniels, Josh Fernandez, and Caymen Cline for your hard work and the contributions you made at k-Space this summer.

Jacob Wilburn earned his Masters in Computer Science from DigiPen Institute of Technology earlier this year. Jacob was tasked with building multiple AI agents and automation tools for the Sales Engineering team.

Eric Smaby, Mechanical Engineer at University of Michigan, and Alexandra Daniels, Mechanical Engineer at University of Michigan, together were tasked with developing a low cost 2D stage system which would take full light measurements of a 300mm x 300mm wafer, or smaller. And to introduce them to our industrial metrology efforts, which often involve large glass or solar panels, we additionally tasked them with building a custom glass storage rack. Two very useful hands-on products.

Josh Fernandez: Computer Engineer at Michigan Technological University, was given the task of building a Nucleo PCBA tester, and a software stack for validating uploaded firmware to Teensy Microcontrollers.

Caymen Cline recently earned his BSE in Computer Engineering at University of Michigan – Dearborn. Caymen has interned at k-Space every summer during his time in college. This year, Caymen was asked to build data acquisition and instrument control software for a UV photoluminescence measurement system, plus help out with other software development projects.

Great Jobs, Full-Time Employment

For the final deliverable of their internship, all five interns had to present their work. We also asked them to talk about the experience and detail any setbacks, things they wish they had done differently, and potential new paths they undertook.

And just like that, three of our interns are returning to school. We will miss them. However, two interns, Jacob Wilburn and Caymen Cline, have graduated and accepted full-time positions at k-Space.
